Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

The Prayer Request

On January 5th, 2010, our cousin Allie sent out the following email which we later discovered was circulated to hundreds, maybe even thousands of people all throughout the world.  The power of the joined prayers in Michael's behalf was, and continues to be so amazing.  Thank you to everyone who participated in this specific prayer, and for all the continued prayers that are offered for Michael.

To all my Friends and Family,

As some of you know my cousin, Michael, was injured while on duty in Afghanistan. An IED detonated, injuring several in his party as well as killing at least 3 others. Michael's injuries were not life threatening but as the days have gone on, we have learned that it was necessary to remove his left eye and there is a possibility that the damages may be too great for the right eye. He sustained several other injuries including, shrapnal from the explosive device, wounds to his neck and left shoulder, a broken jaw and facial wounds and more. As I am typing this email Jim (Michael's dad) just posted that they have found more metal in Michael's right eye and have decided to transport him immediately to Walter Reed where there are expert retinal doctors who can decide what can be done.

Michael is in Germany now and again the decision has been made to transport him immediately to Walter Reed. His family will meet him and provide support as he recovers. He has been blessed to have his good friend Josh and Josh's father with him at the hospital in Germany while he waits to come back to the USA. We are grateful for the news they have been able to provide to Jim's family and the support they have been to Michael.

At this time, we are requesting that on Wednesday January 6th @ 5:00 p.m MST, all who have read this email, will be able to take a few moments to pray for Michael and his family and all other wounded military personnel. Let us pray for quick healing of their bodies and spirits. Let us pray for all the families who will be traveling and who stand in need of extra comfort at this time, that they will arrive at their destinations in safety and be with their loved ones at this time. And please remember the families who have lost their loved ones during this event.

We each have individually been blessed by the service of all the men and women in our armed forces and have an opportunity to give something back. Please pass this on to anyone in your email list and please remember to pray on Wed.

Thank You
