Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Because his jaw is wired shut, Michael has to be on a liquid diet.  Yesterday he was going over all his options for lunch with my mom and he got his liquid veggies, and liquid fruits, (and of course, the milkshake), and then my mom said, "what about meat?"  In a very shocked and disgusted tone Michael replied, "liquid meat?"  But, being the stud that he is, he went ahead with the liquid turkey, gave it one sip, and that was the end of the liquid meat.  What a trooper.

Yesterday one of the therapists took Michael to ride the exercise bicycle.  After about 5 minutes she made him stop and kept asking him if he was tired and worn out.  (He gets a little frustrated with the therapist because she talks to him really slowly as if he had some kind of brain damage, or didn't speak english).  He wanted to keep going because the movement and exercise was really feeling good but she wouldn't let him do anymore.  After getting back to the room he told my dad, "my legs didn't get blown up, my head did so why would I get tired after cycling for 5 minutes?"  We aren't really sure the reasoning behind limiting his exercise, but I'm sure they know best.

Michael also has some great decorations for his walls now.  Some children from a local catholic school made him these awesome posters.

We don't know if this is just a wierd coincedence, or if only his friends knew that he had a secret obsession with monkeys, but he is getting quite the monkey collection from many different friends who have come to visit.  It adds a little spunk to the room.
