Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Pictures

My dad was able to send me some more pictures today and I wanted to post them for everyone to see. Michael has received a couple hand mand quilts with thank you notes from very caring people who are grateful for his service.  They have been put to good use!  He really does love them.
Erin liked them too and Michael was nice enough to share!

We got a lot of response to Michael's Dr Pepper dream.  I have people ask me all the time if he has gotten a Dr Pepper yet!  My mom said they were sitting in Michael's room when someone brought in balloons and this 6 pack of Dr Pepper.  When my mom told him what it was he responded with the thumbs up you see in the picture!  Thanks Asay's he is so grateful!

This last picture was taken today as Michael made his first trip down the hall!  He was so glad to be up and out of bed and we are so glad to see him moving and getting stronger everyday.  I am so impressed with his determination and strength.  Michael you are my hero!

  2. We are thinking about you Mike (aka Lassie :-) You are in our thoughts and prayers especially on this day. Your strength is an inspiration to us all and while you have heard it before, hear it again-you are an AMERICAN HERO. Let everytime you hear that make you a little more stronger and proud to be TACP!
