Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Michael's first visitors while in Germany

While Michael was at Landstuhl Area Reginal Medical Center in Germany awaiting his transfer back to the states, we were all so blessed by the fact that he was able to have some very close friends visit him and give us an update on how he looked and responded.

Josh Hartz, who is a childhood friend of Michael's, and basically our adopted brother, was on vacation in Germany with his father when they heard that Michael was being transferred to Germany.  It just so happened that Michael was being sent to a location that was not too far from them.

They arrived at the hospital and visited with Michael, and though he was under some pretty good sedation at that time, he was responsive to them by giving Josh a "thumbs-up" sign when he was asked if he could hear them and if he knew who they were.

We are so grateful to Josh and his dad Mike who visited with Michael.  What a tender mercy that the Lord blessed us all with by having Josh and his father there to be with Michael when none of us could be.
