Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

I know we posted about Josh and his dad Mike going and being with Michael in Germany but I thought I would post a picture we took of Michael and Josh just this past Thanksgiving, a few weeks before Michael was deployed. Growing up Michael and Josh were inseperable.  Where ever Michael was you were sure to find Josh close by.  I am sure my dad could tell you lots of stories of broken windows and piles of ashes where they had tried to burn or melt something that should not have been burned or melted!  Even my poor barbies couldn't escape the path of destruction these boys left in their wake!  As they grew into men they remained good friends.  Josh was on vacation in Germany when we found out Michael was hurt.  My parents called him when they found out Michael would be going to Germany and Josh and his dad dropped everything and went to the hospital to be by Michael's side.  Josh we can't say thank you enough.  It was such a relief to us as a family and especially to my parents to know that someone was there with Michael when we all we so far away.  Josh said when he talked to Michael he responed with nods and when Josh went to leave at the end of the day Michael gave him a thumbs up!  Words cannot express our gratitude to Josh and his dad.  We know that the Lord had a hand in it and it was not just a coincidence that Josh was in Germany so close to that hospital at this time.  We love you Josh!

  1. What an amazing "tender mercy" as you have already labeled the experience. Thank you for the updates, Kally.
