Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Update - 02/12/10

Yippee! He got the wires holding his jaw in place cut today and he can open his mouth.  The plates are still in there but at least he can talk, and chew, and yawn, and whatever else we do with our jaws.  Michael has complained how badly the wires hurt his mouth and said there were a number of sores that had formed.  When the doctor looked in his mouth today to see how best to unwire it, he found a small stone that had worked its way through Michael's skin and was resting between his cheek and gum.  How amazing is that?  He still has several places where small particles went in that the doctors left alone. He was told they may work themselves out and not to worry too much about them.

He  also got a loaner white cane from the blind rehab specialist and immediately took off practicing how to get around. His mom went along as spotter but kept quiet as he made his way through the building and outdoors to walk the grounds.  He doesn't go too far because he tires pretty quickly but it's a start.  She thought it was pretty neat how he figured the sidewalks all around the place had "two little seams and one big seam".  After he mentioned it, she looked and saw the cement was poured in such a way that the seams were just as he described.

If anyone is interested in sending him mail, please do it through his mom's current address.  It is much quicker and easier to manage than going through the hospital system.  The address is:

M Malarsie (or Roxann Malarsie)
Fisher House Room #129
PO Box 1886
Los Altos, CA 94022

Well, that's it for now.  I've got to go and make sure I have everything packed for tomorrow.  I'm finally going to get home.

Thanks for your support and don't forget to thank the Lord for all your blessings.  If you can't think of any, send me an email and I'll give you a few examples.  I've had quite an awakening as to just how blessed we really are, even in the midst of personal tragedies.  Thanks again.

Dad
