Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Here's Michael just hanging out in bed chatting on the phone.  Obviously this picture was taken before his therapist approved only two activities in bed (hanging out wasn't one of them - see earlier post).  :)
A friend of Michael's got him this cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. He was so excited about it that from the looks of it, he didn't even wait for a plate!
My mom made the mistake of mentioning to Michael that there was a camera on the ceiling that overlooked his bed.  He just couldn't stand the thought of being watched, and apparently it wasn't sufficient enough for him that the nurses said it was off.  So being the trouble makers that they are, mom and Michael pushed the bed over to the wall under the camera so that he could cover it up.
This is the sign that hangs by every doorway that leads out of the unit.  Apparently there is a high run away risk in the TBI unit (tramatic brain injury unit).  Michael said he totally understands the feeling of wanting to escape!
Michael received several Valentine's Day cards from a couple different Elementary schools and he absolutely loved them! The kids who made these said the sweetest things and my mom and Michael have really enjoyed reading those when they have some down time.
Here's the bike that Michael and his therapist ride. They make him wear a helmet and he isn't too fond of that. It was forbidden for my mom to take a picture of him in his helmet. :) This is such a cool bike though - I hope he's able to get one like this when he comes home!
