Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

I talked with my mom yesterday and got a few small updates.  They will be meeting today with some folks from the blind rehab program to finalize the details.  Michael should be transferring over on Tuesday and he can't wait!

My mom and Michael took their first outing together yesterday.  After getting special permission, my mom was able to take Michael away from the hospital for a couple hours.  She said they drove around and found a good pizza place, and then Michael wanted to go over to Walmart to get some guitar picks.  As all Walmart's are, it was really crowded, really loud and very chaotic so they didn't stay very long at all because it seemed to be a little overwhelming for Michael.  All in all though it was a great experience to get away from the hospital and feel somewhat "normal" again.

Yesterday Michael also got some help from a therapist on getting back into a routine sleeping schedule.  Right now he wakes up really early in the morning (like 4am) totally awake and alert and ready to go, but then once afternoon comes he needs a nap, and then that results in a late bedtime, so overall his sleep schedule is just totally crazy.  So the mission of the therapist yesterday was to help teach him some sleep relaxation techniques and to help start to change his mindset about sleeping.

Once the therapist got there, my mom left for a bit to go get a sweatshirt from her room and when she came back Michael was sitting on the floor in his room.  When she asked why he was sitting on the floor, he laughingly told her that the therapist said that bed was only for two things, sleeping and having sex, so if he wasn't doing either of them, then he needed to stay off his bed.  They got a pretty good laugh out of that, and my mom showed Michael where the chair was so from now on he can at least sit in the chair and not on the floor!

  1. Thank you for the updates. I liked that story; I love the humor your family has in spite of life's trauma.
