Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Ha ha ha, good times

In the IED explosion Michael's two front teeth were broken.  One not to bad, but the other was missing quite a chunk.  I don't know if you could tell by any of the other pictures but if you saw him in person, it was obvious.  In fact, Michael was more upset by the broken teeth than just about everything else.
Well, no longer.  He is trying his best to smile and show his new repaired teeth. Ha ha ha.  Is it obvious that his mouth is still numb?  Perhaps I'll take another picture tomorrow.

He also had another eye appointment today.  It is becoming a regular Tuesday visit.  The doctor is watching his eyes closely to make sure no infection sets is while we wait for the skin around the eye to heal and he can go to surgery.  We are hoping that will take place some time next week.  This eye doctor is an extremely kind man and gets a kick out of some of the things Michael says to him.  Today as the doctor was talking to him about the surgery, Michael asked him "if he would have to cut his hair, cause if he did, it was a deal braker."  The doctor laughed and said he did not have to cut his hair.
