Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

March 14, 2010

Michael and I continue to be amazed at the generosity and kindness of so many people.  Today, people from a local business came to the hospital and put on a BBQ for the veterans here.  They had hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks for everybody. The president of the company took a few moments to express his thanks to the men and women for their service and sacrifice.  For some reason, it hit me pretty hard and I had a difficult time not crying (imagine that!).  Here is a picture of us at the BBQ.

Michael and I want to give our heartfelt thanks to all of you too.  The support has been so great.
Michael's face and eyes continue to heal.  We know he still has few more surgeries for his eyes, to repair his eardrum, and some plastic surgery to smooth out the rough spots.  It's mostly a waiting game for that right now though.  Michael continues to keep his sense of humor in full swing.  Today he went to the nurses station for the eye drops that he gets four times a day and the nurse asked him "How are your eyes?" He responded by saying "They're still broken".  The nurses know him now and don't feel too akward when he makes jokes like that.  Last night when we were on the phone with the family in New Mexico, his dad asked the same question. Michael answered by saying "well, the left one got taken out in Afghanistan and the other one doesn't work.

After the BBQ today, anyone from the blind school that wanted to go was invited to a symphony at the local community center.  Michael expressed an interest in going which was a total surprise to me (not something he has expressed interest in before).  Here he is visiting with some of the others at the school as we were waiting to go in.

We went to the symphony thinking it would be an orchestra. You know, string instruments, woodwinds, stuff like that.  It turned out to be a brass band with no other instruments.  I guess it was decided that because our group is blind or partly blind, we needed to be at the front so we could hear it well.  Man, it was very loud but Michael thought it was great.  He did say next he would like a symphony with string instruments.  They played music and songs I've never heard before but they were quite talented.
Michael has his own room but shares a bathroom with a man named Jose.  There has not been one day since Michael moved in when Jose hasn't accidently locked Michael out of the bathroom.  One day Jose came to Michael and promised him that he was not doing it. ???  Well today Jose moved out, so we will see if the door continues to lock by itself.

Like I said before, we sure appreciate all those of you who have prayed and continue to pray for Michael and our family.  It makes this whole thing feel a little lighter than it would have otherwise. Like Michael's dad Jim always says, please keep praying for Michael and all the other men and women serving our country in dangerous places around the globe.  They need our support and our love.
