Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

The other night we were able to get on the computer and skype with Michael and my mom.  It was so fun!  Michael's nieces and nephews loved being able to see him and talk to him.  Michael has 3 nieces and 4 nephews all under the age of 5 and they all love him!  They can't wait until he comes home and can push them on the swings and jump with them on the trampoline!  We are so grateful for modern technology that lets us use the computer to talk to and see Michael when we are all so far away!  We look forward to the day when Michael comes home but until then I guess we will be frequent users of Skype! We love you Michael!

  1. I too have nieces and nephews far away(California). We skype quite often usually when they want to show off. I visited last year, and my brother answered the door and exclaimed, Aunt Donna is here! And they all ran to the computer! Don't stay away too long Michael!
