Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Stabbed in the back... Multiple stitches required

So the other day I was wandering around the house with no shirt on and my wife noticed that I had a few questionable mole lookin' things on my back. I thought nothing of it and spent the next few days making jokes about my back cancer. Lesson learned folks. We got an appointment to get them looked at and the doctors decided that I had one that was questionable enough to be removed. Next thing I know I am laying on my face with a giant needle stuck in my back followed by a scalpel. They cut a decent size mole thing off and now it is on a journey to the VA lab to find out what it's really made of. They took pictures on someones iPhone so that in a few weeks when I go back they can compare and make sure nothing else is out of the ordinary. Pretty sweet day. Now my back hurts but as far as we know I am cancer free! Time to celebrate!
