Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

The Big Event

The Marriott Center on the campus of Brigham Young University is an impressive building. It is the place the BYU basketball games are played in as well as the venue for concerts and other "large gathering" events.

Michael may not have been able to see the crowd but he sure could feel the energy in the place.  The back section was blocked but 3/4 of the seats were open for attendees. We heard an estimate that attendance was somewhere between nine to fifteen thousand people.

After the show was over, both Steve Young and Michael were mobbed by the crowd.  Steve got the people wanting to shake the hand of an NFL Hall of Famer and former BYU great (most of them were the "older" crowd).  Michael got the people wanting to thank him for his service and congratulate him and Jesse on their marriage (a lot of them were young people which really made an impression me).  When Michael was introduced by Steve during his talk, Steve told the crowd this speaking engagement was the first stop on Michael and Jesse's honeymoon.  I think every woman in the place said "ahhh" at the same time.

Before the start of the program, we all met at the Hinckley Building.  Steve Young's assistant asked for some pictures.  Steve's assistant also asked Roxann and I to stand with them for a picture. Michael leaned over and whispered to his mom: "Don't stand by me, we're fighting." She asked him why and he responded with: "Because you and Dad are following me on my honeymoon!" We all laughed and from that point on, Roxann teased him about hanging out and doing stuff together every chance she got. We offered to go to Las Vegas and promised to be really quiet so he wouldn't be bothered but he declined the offer. I just can't understand why (lol).....

After the program ended, we went to their hotel so he could change clothes.  We took his uniform with us so they didn't have to take it to Las Vegas.  We said goodnight, goodbye, good luck, and have fun.  Here we are in the lobby of their hotel before they kicked us out for the last time.

They left Monday morning and we didn't hear much from them all week.  We assume they're having a blast. I hope he gets some rest because as soon as they get back, we get to move two storage units full of furniture into their house.  Roxann and I will miss having him close by but we're excited to watch them start out on their new life together.
