Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

What do you think?

Wednesday we had to be at the VA hospital in San Francisco by 9:00 a.m. to spend the day getting his prosthetic eye made.  Michael's left eye socket is not ready yet so we were there for the right eye to be made.  This first picture is Michael waiting for the restoration clinician to come in.  This is the same clinician who made eyes for the movie The X Men and the upcoming movie Thing 2.
The following two pictures are part of the process to get a mold of Michael's eye socket.  First the clenician put a clear plastic mold with a protruding tube in Michael's eye and then filled it with some white runny molding stuff.

It had to be held in place for about two minutes as it set up.  Michael said it felt cool and maybe he would just leave it like that.  He was joking and said he could hang a flag on it and as he moved his eye back and forth it would wave the flag or he could wave at people with his eyes.  He continues to this day to make jokes and enjoy this journey that God has put him on.
Michael wanted his first set of eyes to resemble his original ones.  I had two of his sisters take pictures of their eyes and send it to us so I could give the clinician an idea of what we wanted.  Here he is messing around while waiting.  He was asking "how do I look?"
Here is the clinician working on the hand painted eye.  It literally took all day and he finished about 4:00 p.m.  It was worth the wait cause we wanted him to do a good job.

We found ways to keep ourselves entertained.  The hospital is right on the bay so I took Michael outside to take some pictures.
I explained to him how beautiful it is here with the ocean, trees, and mountains but he didn't care.  He said it was windy and cold and please just hurry and take the picture.

So, here it is!  What do you think?  I couldn't begin to explain the whole process of how this was ,but I love the end result.
Michael has a follow-up appointment with the eye surgeon in July and we will know then if he is ready for his left eye to be made.  In the meantime, Michael is still contemplating what design he wants on his second set of eyes.  He keeps coming up with so many ideas and keeps changing his mind.  Fortunately there is time to keep thinking about it.
