Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

A doctor visit of a different kind.

This time the doctor visit is to the ENT  (ear, nose, and throat).  Michael's left eardrum was ruptured in the blast and he has not been able to hear well from that side since then.  The hope was that with time, the ear might heal on its own.  Here is Michael waiting paitently for his turn with the doctor.
He was getting bored waiting and started exploring.....

Then Jesse joined in with helping him not be bored.

What are these buttons for?

After some rides up and down and around in the chair, the doctor finally showed up.

The doctor looked in his ear and said it was obvious that his ear was not going to heal on it's own.  Another surgery needs to happen. Michael needs to have another hearing test then we can schedule the surgery for his ear.  We are thinking perhaps in a couple of months this will happen.

Yes, that is Michael laughing.  The doctor was using some sort of suction machine to clean out his ear and Michael said it tickled.  Well, that was a first, a doctor visit that made him laugh.

P.S.  The day after Michael "acquired" his new chair with wheels, he was walking to his first morning class when he heard someone call his name from down the hall.  He immediately recognized the voice of his computer instructor and stopped in place.  He heard her say "don't think I don't know what happened to my chair", Michael smiled, gave her a thumbs up, and continued on to his class.
