Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Still climbing

Michael loves rock climbing and has not let becoming blind stop him, however, it has been a different kind of challenge.  He used to look and plan a route before he went up the wall but of course he can't do that anymore.  He feels and climbs, feels and climbs.  He said sometimes when he reaches to find a hold and cannot locate one he knows one has to be close so he jumps.  In the following picture you will see that there was one place where he was not able to grab a hold and fell back. He swung from the wall and I thought for sure he was going to hit it when he swung back, it was one of those look but don't look kind of things for me. Michael has a great sence of his surroundings and he knew where to put his arm out to keep himself from hitting.  I asked him when he came down if he was worried and he said "no, he had an idea where the wall was," and he climbed some more.

Tying his own rope.
Life is what we make it.
