Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Good times.

I think perhaps he has been here to long.

This is John who met Michael as they were both serving in Afghanistan.  He is on leave here in California and wanted to be sure and come visit.  Michael liked hearing how the guys back at FOB Wilson are doing and get a few more details about what happened when the IED went off.  Michael would love to be back there right now but he understands that that part of his life is over.

John brought Michael a patch that was designed and made in honor of him and his partner Brad Smith.  This is the patch and a picture of John explaining it to Michael.  It was great to visit with John and his parents.  Thank you for taking the time to be here.
