Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Out of Service

If you've been lucky enough to spend any length of time around my guide dog Xxon you know that, other than myself, he loves nothing more than chasing tennis balls and sticks. It doesn't matter what the weather is like, where we are, or what is going on. Fetch reigns supreme.
Today my brother in law was out front with him playing fetch and when they got to the garage to come inside he noticed Xxon was limping.
By the time I heard, the family had discovered that somehow Xxon had gotten cuts on the bottom of all four of his feet and was bleeding.
The front yard isn't landscaped yet so most of it is decomposed granite but he has been running on that for months now. We have no idea what happened to him but now he can't move at all without limping. He hasn't tried to stand up once since Jesse cleaned his feet and wrapped them up.
We have an appointment scheduled at the vet tomorrow morning but it looks like poor Xxon is out of commission  for who knows how long.
It's weird having him hurt like this. He is usually tough as a rock and even with cut feet he didn't want to stop playing. He will be spending the next few days having everything brought to him so he only walks as little as possible. I need the big guy ready to rock and roll! That lousy white cane just dosen't cut it.Xxon Bandages
