Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

The Dedication

Last Thursday was the official dedication ceremony for our amazing new house by Operation Finally Home.
These are definitely our type of people, everything was laid back, to the point, and more heart felt than a lot of ceremonies I have been to.
The people who originally were going to do the landscaping in the front yard backed out for some reason so, two days before the ceremony the folks who poured the concrete chose to do it all for free. They worked like dogs for two days strait and got everything done with honestly no more than two minutes to spare. I have heard over and over how amazing the front yard looks. It is amazing what people are willing to do.

This entire process has been one amazing story of generosity after another. People were here working on the house during all hours of the day, staying late, helping gather the trampoline that blew away, and a bunch of other things. We have been very blessed through this entire process to be able to work with some really amazing people and our thanks will never be enough for what they have done for us. As if building a house isn't enough they went the extra mile with every detail and are always there when we need something from them.
Operation Finally Home, Tilson, and all the others who were involved who I can't remember and don't even know about, thank you all so much. From the very bottom of our hearts. You have changed our lives forever.

Back to the story now. The ceremony had a few speakers who talked about Jesse and I and what we have been through. A certain retired Command Chief who claims to hate speaking, really did an amazing job and had most of us in tears by the end of it. You don't become a Command Chief without having, if not the desire, the ability to make an amazing speech.

Jesse and I got to share our thanks for everything after that then everyone got to come inside and do a little looking around the house. We did a couple media interviews that I'm going to ask Jesse or my mom to post a link to so you all can watch it too.

This has been a life changing experience and never before had I imagined that so many could do so much for so little for someone else. Thank you all so much again.
