Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

The Ole Shaft...

This is going to be a short post…to say that this bothers me is an understatement.

I got this in an email today.

Defense officials are expected to announce that military retirees and
their
dependents that live more than 40 miles from a military treatment
facility
or BRAC (base closure) site will lose access to TRICARE Prime as early
as
next April. This move could force as many as 171,000 retirees to shift
to
TRICARE Standard, which would mean an increase in out-of-pocket
costs--especially those with special needs dependents or other chronic
health issues. The first round of Prime service changes is "tentatively"
planned to go into effect in the West region on April 1. The North and
South
regions will see the plan implemented by October 1, 2013.
