Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

The Groundbreaking!

Yesterday was a big day for us. We had the official ground breaking for our new house!
It was the perfect ceremony, short and sweet. There were representatives from Operation Finally Home, Tilson Home Corporation, and Vintage Oaks.
Everyone got a chance to say a few words and then with cameras flashing we all dug the first holes in our lot.
I actually just dug the first weed and honestly it was more of a scrape across the surface and less of a dig. That ground is hard.

After that we walked over to where the house was staked out and they explained what it all meant and said that the house should be done in early 2013.

Then came Jesse's favorite part…the media interviews. We knocked out two or three of them. Of course she did awesome and once she was started was a complete natural.  Once we finished that we  headed down the hill toward the amenities center for lunch.
We had some good food, snow cones, and lot of talking. The amenities center (Clubhouse) is absolutely awesome I might add. The kids were immediately drawn to the pools and lazy river. We could hardly get them to eat anything  before they took off.
There is a winery just across the road from Vintage Oaks who gave us a welcome sign and a no kidding grape plant in a pot.
I have decided that once the house is up and we are moved in I am going to get a few more and make growing grapes another hobby of mine. Why not right?  Once lunch was finished we headed to the pool ourselves and spent the next few hours playing with the kids and friends and just relaxing. We are so excited to call this place home someday!

Next week we will be going to Tilson to meet with them and some folks who donated a free 3D model of the house for us. So I can get a better idea of what it will all be like.  I am sure Jesse won't mind putting some pictures up once it gets here.

We are still blown away by all of this. We will never be able to thank Operation Finally Home, Tilson, and everyone else who has been involved in this process.
Very rarely does a couple in their twenties (late twenties for Jesse ha ha), get to move into their dream house and not have to worry about making payments on it.
I would say this is a dream come true but this is something I never considered possible. Our lives have been changed forever because of the generosity of others. We can never say thank you enough.

God bless you all
