Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

A St. Patrick's Day run...

Hi all! This is Jess! I just wanted to post a few pictures from Michael's race this last Saturday. He and his running partner took on what they thought was a 4 miler but was actually a 5.86 miler. They did great! Michael placed third in his age group and received a medal. Kadence was thrilled! The weather was a lot better than the week before. The guys don't mind either way really but it was easier with the girls! I am really glad that Michael has the opportunity to do this and the desire to! A big thank you to Adam for running with him! The girls have a lot of fun and they cheer dad on as he comes across the finish line. At this race the announcer knew little bits of info about the racers so it was neat to learn about everyone. When Michael came up he announced that here was the only visually impaired runner in the race and that he was a wounded warrior. There was a round of applause and cheers and again at the award ceremony. I am so proud of Michael and all that he does! He truly is an inspiration!
