Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Is he the one?

This week Michael is in Connecticut working with three dogs, two males and one female, who are almost ready to be placed in a home.  The idea is to match him with a dog that fits his personality and needs, and lifestyle.  He swears he can tell which one is the female when walking cause she swings her hips and he can feel it in the leash...whatever.  In any case, he is extremely excited and says it feels good to be able to walk fast.  It will be a few months before he will actually be able have a dog of his own so he will be sad to leave them behind on Friday when he flies back to New Mexico.
Here he is at a train station working with a dog.
Sunday he leaves for Palo Alto, CA to get some surgery done on his left eye and will be there for ten days.
