Michael was deployed from Fort Riley, KS to Afghanistan the first week of December 2009. He was stationed at FOB Wilson, near Kandahar. On January 3, 2010, while on a routine foot patrol, he was seriously injured by an IED. The same event claimed the lives of his Air Force companion and three soldiers from Fort Carson, CO.
This blog chronicles the events of Michael's life from his injury to the present day. He is now the author of this blog; is married, is a father and lives in Texas with his guide dog, Xxon. His injuries are now healed, he is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is planning on what to do for his next adventure.

Thanksgiving

Michael is an only boy with four sisters.  It has been his goal since he was little to make sure we all remembered he is not one of the girls.  He always chose his own path and he continues to do this today.  This year at Thanksgiving we decided it would be fun to make gingerbread houses and Michael joined in.

He worked hard on his creation......
and ended up with this coffin!!  As usual, he likes to get his mom and sisters worked up.
There were so many people at the house that we got a little stir crazy so we all headed over to the church and had a family dance.  Michael did not dance much but he did play his new mouth harp and sounded pretty good.

We found some games that Michael could play and we all had some great laughs.  We even found out some things about him that we didn't know before, but we won't get into that!  It was healing to hear good, solid laughter coming from Michael, something we have not heard for a long, long time.
Although things have happened this year that we would not have chosen, there is much to be grateful for.   Good friends, family, community, church, and our blessed country.  We love you all.
